Detail of studding sails on USS Monongahela

Summary[edit]

Description
English: This photograph is taken from the end of the bowsprit and shows the starboard studding sails set on the foremast. The sails shown are the topmast and topgallant studding sails. This can be confirmed by comparison with other photos of the same ship with studding sails set. The lower studding sail is a different shape, whilst the topmast and topgallant studding sails are wider at the foot than at the head. A reference for this is Underhill's Masting and Rigging of the Clipper Ship & Ocean Carrier, page 162 for a diagram showing the shape of the lower studding sail versus the ones set at a higher level and page 190-195 for an explanation of how they are rigged.
