Summary[edit]

Description
English: Stratford's Western Junction on the GER lines out of Liverpool Street, with the lines diverging to Woolwich on the right. Great Eastern Railway Class 61 0-4-4T No. 172, as rebuilt by Holden in March 1891, heads an ex-Loughton/Epping/Ongar service towards Liverpool Street station, as evidenced by the position of the two green, white rimmed discs (GER code 66) on the bunker of the loco, and the (Up Local) line it's running on. The carriages are typical close-coupled GER suburban stock of the period. The nearest two-compartment Brake Third appears to be a Worsdell Dia.507 of 1883-4 and the next four carriages Dia.402 Worsdell Thirds.

The track layout dates the photo to post-1893 and the loco (built by Kitson & Co. in 1878) was withdrawn in May 1906. From the style of ballasting, the photo dates from within the last year or two of that time frame.

This photo was taken from an old original photo we came across while helping to clear the house of a deceased friend. I have uploaded it to Flickr in the hope that it might be interesting to steam enthusiasts.
