English: An attempt to insert the flag of St David (of Wales) within the UK flag of England, Ireland, and Scotland in a way which accords with the conventions of heraldry. |

The flag "works" heraldicly because black (sable) is a fur, not a tincture (colour), and yellow represents a metal (gold) not a fur or tincture. Heraldic rules say you may not place a tincture against a tincture, nor a fur against a fur, nor a metal against a metal (unless you are the Pope, for some reason).
