DescriptionUp close with the Lions.jpg |
The imposing stone relief from which it takes its name - two lions, three meters tall, facing each other over the massive lintel - lend an air of rugged grandeur to the acropolis entrance. It is the earliest example of Greek monumental sculpture. The lions stand erect, facing each other, with their front paws on two small concave altars. Their heads, which were apparently shown frontally, have not survived; some traces left on the slab panel indicate that they were made of some heavy material, passibly steatite. The column that supports part of the entablature of a building symbolizes building, most probably the palace itself, the royal house of Mycenae at which the 2 lions had been appointed as guards. |
