Summary[edit]
DescriptionVALENTIN DE BOULOGNE - Concert avec une diseuse de bonne aventure - A Musical Company with a Fortune-Teller (Reunion with a Gypsy) 1631 LIECHTENSTEIN COLLECTION PRINCIERE.jpg |
English: Late work commissioned by a Sicilian aristocrat living in Madrid, Fabrizio Valguarnera, when on a visit to Rome in 1631: a “picture of people featuring a gypsy, with soldiers and other women playing instruments”. Strong contrasts of light and shade, known as chiaroscuro, are modelled on Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio (1571–1610). As in this painting, Valentin’s work is based on the secular scenes of Caravaggio’s early period, but he combined them with the dark, highly contrasting colors of the master’s late style |
