Summary[edit]
DescriptionVictoria Settlement (15143699978).jpg |
Victoria Settlement was where Fort Victoria, Alberta once stood. It was a Hudson's Bay Company fort and was established in 1864. Fort Victoria, British Columbia was built first in 1843, that outpost was demolished and had its lands sold off also in 1864 when the newly incorporated city grew too big due to the influx of people from the gold rush. So, although these two forts carried the same name, they didn't really exist at the same time. There is an original building left here on site, the HBC clerk's quarters house where the clerks lived. When visiting these old forts, I think to myself: Hey, I was a HBC clerk once for ~5 months way back when I just finished university stationed at the Chinook outpost making $8.50 an hour. :D There are costumed interpretive guides here and Pearl was a fountain of knowledge and seemingly knows everything there is to know about these things. We had a very enjoyable time here, thanks Pearl! This wraps up my Historic Alberta Annual Pass series. Much thanks to anyone looking through them. Not sure what the next series will be, but I'm sure it'll come to me. I've been going through my digital archives and searching for themes that I found interest in even 10+ years ago. |
