[edit]DescriptionView over the flood plain of a vanished river - geograph.org.uk - 1202078.jpg |
English: View over the flood plain of a vanished river The flat land, once farmed by Court Farm (the "mains" of Ashford Court) was once a river flood plain. The river was a forerunner of today's Teme when the Teme was a tributary of the Wye, running south through Aymestrey. During glacial times a meltwater channel formed at Downton and the Teme found a new route through a limestone gorge. The new course of the river runs through a limestone ridge, enlarged and rejuvenated the existing river running through Ludlow. The new Teme is a bigger, more vigorous river and has cut down into its predecessor's flood plain, which is now several metres above the river. This is also the point where the Teme turns east towards the Severn.
