| Description |
Den Haag De Grote of Sint-Jacobskerk is een kerkgebouw in het centrum van Den Haag. Het behoort met het Binnenhof tot de oudste gebouwen van Den Haag. (middenschip) Vanaf ca. 1420 werd de bestaande toren gebouwd. De zeskantige vorm is uniek in Nederland. Aangenomen wordt dat de achtkantige toren van de abdijhttp://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grote_of_Sint-Jacobskerk_(Den_Haag)kerk in Middelburg, waarmee de St. Jacob indertijd verbonden was, als voorbeeld heeft gediend.De kerk werd oorspronkelijk als kruiskerk gebouwd. Tussen 1434 en 1455 werd het schip echter uitgebreid met zijbeuken, waardoor de kruisvorm verloren ging. Deze vergroting maakte de St. Jacob tot het eerste voorbeeld van het Haagse hallentype, een type hallenkerk dat daarna in met name het graafschap Holland op grotere schaal zou worden ingevoerd. Bij dit type hallenkerk zijn de traveeën van de zijbeuken elk voorzien van een hoge topgevel met een eigen kap die dwars staat op het dak van de middenbeuk. Deze constructie maakte het mogelijk de zijbeuken van grote vensters te voorzien.
