Summary[edit]

Description
English: Photo taken at the Lofoten War Memorial Museum (Norwegian: Lofoten Krigsminnemuseum) in Svolvær, Norway's largest exhibition of uniforms and smaller items related to the Second World War and the German occupation of Norway 1940 – 1945:
  • Misc. exhibits (uniforms, tools, equipment and other objects) representing Nazi Germany's use of forced slave labour when constructing the Polar Eisenbahn railway (Polarkreiseisenbahn) and Ost Bahn for the Deutsche Reichsbahn during World War II:
    • (Calf-lenght jackboot on mannequin in Wehrmacht army uniform)
    • Erst siegen – dann reisen! / Denke daran: Räder müssen rollen für den Sieg!, German propaganda poster for the "Wheels have to roll for victory!" campaign in 1942 promoting increased transport capacity at the turn of the Second World War
    • Achtung! Minen, mine field danger warning sign with skull and crossbones symbol
    • Slave labourers' bowls found at Saltfjellet, displayed in a box originally for Leuchtpatronen
etc.
During World War II under the Nazi occupation of Norway, nearly 13,000 Soviet and Yugoslav prisoners of war constructed the stretch of the Nordland Railway from Mosjøen to Dunderland with the NSB’s full approval. The Nazis sought to build the railroad all the way north to Kirkenes, but this proved impossible due to insurmountable conditions and terrain. The huge numbers of prisoners of war and the railway became, effectively, an appalling slave camp with atrocious conditions and a high mortality rate.
