Summary[edit]

Description
English: Wall on Main Street, Strelley. This wall, bounding the Strelley Hall grounds, is constructed of Bulwell Stone, a local very impure, coarse grained and flaggy magnesium limestone. It is too soft for most aggregate purposes, but serves as a good ornamental building and rockery stone. This photograph shows clearly the effects of weather and ivy growth on the soft stone over a couple of hundred years. Bulwell Stone was used extensively in the past as a local building stone. Walk round the older parts of Nottingham and nearly every front garden or yard is enclosed by a Bulwell Stone wall. Notable instances of its use include 4574, 659723 and the lower courses of the Houses of Parliament.
