Photograph shows Watanabe holding two pots of guayule plants for research project to produce rubber for the war effort at the concentration camp where Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Manzanar, California June 1942. Walter T. Watanabe, rubber project foreman, examining two specimens of guayule, rubber-bearing desert shrub, in various stages of growth. In his left arm, Watanabe holds a matured 24-year-old shrub and in his right arm, a two-year-old plant which is in bloom. The blooms will be used in cross pollination in experiments to improve the rubber content of guayule.
