Description

Übersichtskarte zum Wanderweg "Grundhofweg" im Stadtgebiet der Kur- und Kreisstadt Bad Salzungen. Dieser relativ kurze Wanderweg (4 km) führt zum Reiterhof im Grundhof und auf den westlichen Gipfel der Salzunger Weinberge. Ein Steinkreuz mit Informationstafel steht in unmittelbarem Zusammenhang zu Martin Luther. Die Webseite der Stadt Bad Salzungen berichtet dazu: Die Legende zum Sühnekreuz besagt, dass Luther und seine Entführer einst nicht den direkten Weg Richtung Wartburg nahmen. Um Zeugen und Verfolger zu verwirren und abzuschütteln, reiten sie zunächst in verschiedene Richtungen, nehmen Umwege und teilen sich. Dabei kommt es im Bereich des Grundhofes zu einem tragischen Unglück: einer der "Entführer" wird vom Schlag getroffen, stürzt vom Pferd und stirbt auf der Stelle. Erst gegen Mitternacht erreicht Martin Luther mit Burghard Hund von II. Wenkheim die Wartburg bei Eisenach. Diesem Verstorbenen zu Ehren – es soll sich um einen Adeligen aus Salzungen gehandelt haben, dessen Wappen in den Stein eingraviert ist – stellte man das Sühnekreuz auf. Seit mehr als 500 Jahren zeugt es von den Ereignissen.
