Summary

[edit]
Description
English: War memorial Paddington Station In memory of over 3000 GWR employees killed in both world wars although originally erected (and unveiled on Armistice Day 1922) for the victims of WW1, this sculpture is by Charles Sergeant Jagger(1885-1934) who was responsible for some very fine war memorials, including the Royal Artillery War Memorial at Hyde Park Corner. He was a member of the Artists' Rifles, was wounded twice and awarded the Military Cross, which, he said, valued more highly than his awards for art. See http://www.web-mouse.co.uk/remembrance/extracts/remembrance/hf-rem-jagger.htm

I had assumed that the represented a soldier consulting a railway timetable on his way home on leave, but in fact he is reading a letter from loved ones.
