Summary[edit]
DescriptionWarren Historic District - 20220726 - 02 - Stephen Carver House.jpg |
English: The Stephen Carver House, 500 Market Street at West 5th Avenue, Warren, Pennsylvania, July 2022. Built in 1874 to a design by local architect Joseph P. Marston, this two-and-a-half-story wood-framed residence at the north end of the NRHP-listed Warren Historic District is an excellent example of the then-popular Italianate style, with its round- and segmentally-arched windows topped with crowns, low-pitched hipped roof with ornate decorative brackets undergirding widely overhanging eaves, and amply-proportioned wraparound veranda (note especially the fine woodwork, principally in the form of stylized pillars). Original owner Stephen Carver (1802-1884) was one of the most prominent residents of Warren during its early history, arriving in town as a young man in about 1832 and setting himself up as a hotelier (he operated the Carver House, once located at the foot of 4th Avenue on the shore of Conewango Creek) and real estate developer (aside from his own home, he was behind the building of several others within the present-day Warren Historic District). Carver lived in the house until his death, and thereafter it passed through the hands of various other owners before being divided into apartments sometime in the 1940s. In the late '40s, the ground floor space served briefly as a restaurant. However, the building was derelict and being considered for demolition by 2019, when a well-known out-of-town restorer of historic homes purchased the building and effected much-needed repairs. At the time this photograph was taken, renovations had been completed and the property was for sale. |
