Notes

  • Classification: Architecture > Tombs and Monuments, Identified
  • Notes added by Commons: Depicts three tombs in a vertical arrangement. The inscription in the upper-right describes the top tomb: "This faire monument of gray marble standing in the midst of the Church, whereon there is neither Armes nor Epitaph, was made for Sr Rob Throkmorton knt [Sir Robert Throckmorton] who dyed in his pilgrimage to the holy land." Two inscriptions describe tomb locations: between the top and middle tombs an inscription reads "Betwixt two pillars on the North side of the Chancell", and near the bottom tomb an inscription reads: "On the south side of the Chancell betwixt two pillars". Between the middle and bottom tombs an inscription (probably referring to the middle tomb) reads: "Of your Charite, praye for the soule of Syr George Throkmerton [Sir George Throkmorton] Knyght and dame Katheryn hys Wyfe one of the daughters of Syr Nycholas Vause [Sir Nicholas Vause] Knyght lord harroden, Whyche Syr George decessyd the ___ day of ____ in the yere of the incarnation of oure lord god a MCCCC_____ and dame Katheryn died the ____ day of ____ ao Moo ______ on Whole Soules Thee have mercy amen". In lower left an inscription reads "W. Hollar fecit". According to Pennington,[1] the middle tomb depicts "a man in armour and his wife, with their children at their feet" and the bottom tomb "has the Throckmorton arms on the side." A single solid line borders the work.
