Notes | Amid internal unrest during the later years of Han China, Xiongnu nomad tribesmen kidnapped Cai Wenji during a raid. She was forced into a marriage with a Xiongnu nomad chieftain and bore him two children. Some years later, her late father's friend, the warlord Cao Cao, brought north China under his control and sent a ransom to the Xiongnu to secure her return. She was allowed to return, but had to leave behind her two children. This painting depicts Cai Wenji as she parts with her two children before returning to China. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
