| Description |
English: Postcard of the 1890 Whatcom County courthouse, originally located North of downtown at 1100 Ellsworth Street. One of several in the state designed by Willis A. Ritchie. Similar in design to his 1890 Clark County Courthouse but compositionally resembling the still existing Thurston County courthouse, both were clad in Chuckanut sandstone. Due to the panic of 1893 funds were never raised to purchase the clock for the tower; a clock face was often painted into to postcards such as this one and the top of the tower would be removed completely by the early 1930s. In 1949 the county moved to the site of the current courthouse and this building was subsequently demolished, it is now the site of Fouts Park. |
