English: Wheelock Flight - Trent & Mersey Canal. Below one of the locks at Malkin's Bank.
Boating up the locks the steerer carefully placed the front of his boat against the lock gates while it was still full and put his engine in gear on tickover, pushing gently. His crew member then opened the gate paddles to empty the lock (if travelling single handed he could do this himself). When the water levels have equalised the gates will open. No damage is done to the gates when this is done carefully. Note the split footbridge across the tail of the lock, it has been made in two halves with each half supported on a wrought iron bracket leaving a gap in the middle so a tow rope could be passed through without detaching it from the boat. |
