Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Kapak Raymi is a festival in honor of wisdom, celebrated on the Winter Solstice, December 21st and is a blend of Catholic and ancient Quichua traditions. The Wikis are an important part of the ceremony celebrated by the Quichua people, held on December 21, the Winter Solstice, in Ecuador each year. Wikis wear colorful costumes with masks and speak in high pitched voices so that they are disguised and are members of standing who have earned the right to wear the costume. Their job is to make people laugh by taunting and teasing. They may do this by stealing the ceremonial food, trying to kiss the female visitors or mimicking others, always knowing just how far they can take the joke. They begin imbibing with beer and the traditional alcoholic drink of chicha de jora, when the sun rises, at the start of the ceremony. They continue their antics for as long as the ceremony lasts, often into the evening. Kapak Raymi is a blend of Catholic and ancient Quichua traditions.
