JPEG file comment | SCOTT, William Bell
(b. 1811, Edinburgh, d. 1890, Penkill Castle) Albrecht Dürer on the Balcony of his House 1854 Oil on canvas, 60 x 73 cm National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh Dürer's fame was greater than that of his contemporaries. His commanding presence looms literally and figuratively over Nuremberg in this picture. He stands on a balcony, watching people and animals passing through the massive Tiergartnertor. Across the square is Pilate's House, where annual passion plays were once staged, and the mighty castle dominating the ridge.
