Summary
[edit]DescriptionWind Pump - geograph.org.uk - 280560.jpg |
English: Wind Pump A conspicuous landmark hereabouts. Titterstone Clee hill on the skyline behind.
This wind pump is almost all that remains of Newlands Colliery as I have been told by a 79 year old acquaintance who worked in the local coal mining industry. See http://shropshiremines.org.uk/misc/forestofwyre_coalfield.htm for general mining history of the area. According to my source, Newlands colliery was never successfully worked for coal as the shaft flooded soon after it was sunk. This wind pump obviously couldn't cope with the conditions. |
