| Description |
English: Plantings of witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana), an element of both the Southern Tier region's native flora as well as the traditional plant-based folk medicine of the Seneca people, are an element of the landscape design at the New York State Department of Transportation's Allegany River Rest Area. Opened in 2005 and serving westbound travellers on Interstate 86 at a location between exits 24 and 23 in the Town of Allegany, New York, the rest area sports an FHA "Excellence in Highway Design" award-winning design by the Albany-based architectural firm of Dembling & Dembling, which they describe as "a contemporary interpretation of traditional Native American Indian Longhouse vernacular", with decorative elements reflective of Seneca tribal symbology that were designed in conjunction with artist Carson Waterman. The rest area offers washrooms, a staffed tourist information center, vending machines, and drinking fountains. |
