Summary[edit]

Description
English: Ink drawing by the Polish Romanian artist Witold Rolla-Piekarski from his letter to the scholar Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu, issued from Novaci on December 8 (New Style: December 21), 1902. The letter (published in the source) contains details about the image itself. To the left is Rolla in the process of creating children's toys (he signs himself as maestru de jucării, "master toy-maker"). The scroll to the right quotes part of "Konrad Wallenrod" by Adam Mickiewicz, in the original Polish (Hasdeu and Rolla's first language). Also pictured is an unidentified "Prince Michael" (Michaï Woda), whom Rolla regarded as a founding figure of Novaci, based on a folkloric legend that his letter summarizes; appearing behind him is Schitul Maicelor ("The Sisters' Convent"), which, Rolla noted, only existed as ruins by 1902.
