English: Woodchester Mansion, Woodchester Park In the early 1850s a wealthy and devout client commissioned an unknown architect to produce a unique design where house, monastery and cathedral would become as one. Since 1870 The Mansion has remained frozen in time, one of the most intriguing and beautiful buildings in Britain.
After sixteen years work ceased, leaving many of the rooms unfinished. Doors lead nowhere, corridors end abruptly and fireplaces float hauntingly in mid-air waiting for the floors to meet them. Ladders, scaffolds and templates still litter the site which was to have marked the apogee of the Gothic Revival Style. Today Woodchester Mansion echoes again to the sound of masons hammers, as a major conservation project rolls back the ravages of time and reveals the unique artistry of William Leighs Gothic retreat. Bucknall, the 21 year old architect, used Cotswold stone as his main medium. This unfinished symphony in stone has stone gargoyles extending from the stone guttering; stone chimneys rising six feet above the roof; wonderful stone tracery in the chapel windows; stone roof bosses and vaulting and a marvellous stone bath and fittings. This unfinished masterpiece, with over 90 rooms, extensive servants quarters, its own brewery, bakery and laundry, sumptuous living quarters and a flamboyant chapel, serves as a living model of Gothic construction and an open window on the past.
