Summary[edit]

Description

Xenolith in granite from the Cretaceous of California, USA. (public display, Geology Department, Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, USA)

The dark-colored mass in the above photo is a mafic xenolith ("xeno" = foreign; "lith" = rock) in granite. Xenoliths are pieces of rock that have fallen from the walls or roof of a cooling magma chamber.

The speckled, light-colored host rock is Sierra Nevada Batholith granite. The Sierra Nevada Mountains were significantly uplifted during the Miocene. The batholith is a series of old, cooled magma chambers that were originally deep below a chain of subduction zone volcanoes in eastern California. Well to the north, active and potentially active volcanoes are present in the Cascade Range, where subduction is ongoing today. The Sierra Nevada Batholith consists principally of Cretaceous-aged granites and granodiorites. These rocks are well exposed and readily accessible in places like Yosemite National Park, Kings Canyon National Park, and Sequoia National Park.
