Takeup spool of the Soviet Yauza-209-1 reel-to-reel recorder. Assembly in progress.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Re-assembly of the takeup spool of the Soviet Yauza 209-1 reel-to-reel tape recorder. Step one - placing the free-wheeling pulley wheel on its shaft. The upper surface of the pulley serves as a clutch disk. It is visibly worn and pitted.
The spool of a simple tape recorder is a complex affair. This one has two friction clutches. They (a) prevent jolts of tape tension at the end of the reel (b) stabilize tape tension during playback and recording, which would otherwise vary from the beginning to the end of the reel. This is a so-called weight-sensitive clutch: it adjust tension depending on the weight of the reel of tape.
