English: Ypres Tower, Rye, Sussex The Ypres Tower was built around 1250, as a defence against the French. It is the oldest fortification existing in the Cinque Ports, with the exception of Dover Castle, and is now a fascinating museum. Rye was designated a head Cinque Port in 1336. Cinque Ports were an ancient confederation of harbours used for defence by Edward the Confessor. |
