Summary[edit]
DescriptionYugansky nature reserve fire - day 1 (7758679298).jpg |
Пожар в Юганском заповеднике, 27.07.2012 We'd been planning this trip for a while. My mycologist friend invited me to visit her in her home village and go look for mushrooms together (officially - as part of the monitoring fieldwork for the publication of the 2013 Red List of Yugra). The initial plan was to take a boat (or, we were lucky, a helicopter) to one of the remote field bases in the reserve and collect specimens there - Yugra also suffered from drought this year, but not as severely as Novosibirsk and other more southern regions, so there was some hope we could find at least some fungi. A few days before my flight to Surgut (a transitional point on the way to Ugut, which is a few hundred km to the South up the river Yugan) Lena called and said that we wouldn't be able to go to the nature reserve, because there were big forest fires everywhere and emergency situation had been declared, cancelling all local flights and banning civilians from visiting forests.... Nevertheless... I'd packed all my stuff and was ready to go to the airport here in Novosibirsk, Lena called and told me not to go far from the Surgut airport when I get there - a helicopter taking firefighters to a big forest fire was supposed to fly from Surgut through Ugut and it could pick me up, too. That's what I understood. I didn't realize I'd be the only passenger on that Mi-8, and that 6 guys that waited on the helicopter pad in Ugut and joined me in the chopper were not firefighters at all, but regular park employees (including Lena!). They'd been equipped with high-tech firefighting gadgets (a bunch of shovels, two spraying backpacks and a chainsaw) and sent by their boss to stop a big fire in the square 510 of the nature reserve. Neither did I (or any of the 7 of us) realize that the chopper would simply drop us off (all of us - including us girls) directly near the fire and leave us there for good with a non-functional radio and a satellite phone with half-dead batteries. In the end, everything was fine - pure luck! - but it was a hell of a week. The company was very nice, though, and we even managed to find some fungi :) |
