This is an Aplomado Falcon, Falco femoralis, despite the legend saying Buteo elegans. The other image from the NOAA labeled as Aplomado Falcon (right) is the California race of the Red-shouldered Hawk, Buteo lineatus elegans. Mystery solved. Either the NOAA legend was incorrect, or the original print source had the plates mis-ordered. I'm making a gallery of Pacific Railroad art, since I have several scanned to be uploaded. The quality is generally better than the NOAA images, since those were done with a camera. For this particular image I don't have the lithograph. I downloaded the highest resolution NOAA file and cleaned up the background and some lithographic defects with Photoshop. --Cotinis 19:00, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
