Cropping[edit]

I understand that Carl Van Vechten didn't want his photos cropped, but that awkward, crooked black border isn't really "part" of the photograph, is it? That upside-down reproduction number at the bottom certainly isn't either. Surely they can be removed whilst still upholding Van Vechten's wishes? In any case, both of the URLs given in the Source field (i.e. LoC description page and Link to photo file) now link to cropped versions of the photo. And if the Library of Congress thinks it's fine, surely that should be good enough for us? Thanks, A Thousand Doors (talk | contribs) 22:10, 17 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I completely agree with you. I may upload a version with the white border while still retaining the entirety of the image. MB298 (talk) 06:29, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, MB298. Like the Library of Congress, the version of the photo that's held by the stock photography agency Alamy also doesn't have either the border nor the reproduction number. The National Portrait Gallery has a similar photo from (presumably) the same shoot – it also doesn't have them. It seems clear to me that including them would represent Mr Van Vechten's work far more than if they stayed. A Thousand Doors (talk) 22:41, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
New upload is certainly an improvement, but it still doesn't look quite level. It looks like it needs to be rotated anticlockwise by about half a degree maybe. I'm going to have a shot at uploading an edit myself... A Thousand Doors (talk) 08:16, 4 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
