The cities in Magna Graecia were far from neutral. This may be the truth at the start of the war, but soon enough all the major cities were caught in the conflict between Sparta and Athens, one way or another. The Sicilian Expedition of the Athenians against Syracuse and its allies, in fact, marked a decisive blow to the Athenian power. Amongst others, these were the sides Greek cities took: Syracuse, Gela, Selinus, Himera, Lipara, Lokroi, with Sparta; Rhegion, Katane, Kamarina, Parthenope (Neapolis), with Athens. Also, territories marked as “non-Greek” in the map, took part in the conflict, e.g. Segesta, a city of the Elymians sided with Athens.
