The aircraft in the postcard appears to be an FF-1. Here is a better picture and more info: http://broadcast.illuminatedtech.com/display/story.cfm?bp=96&sid=7992

The FF-1 was in active service from 1933 to 1935 and continuted in reserve service after that. A structurally identical trainer model, the FF-2, was used by the Navy until 1940.
