I have seen this photograph in a book about The Polish Army- Anders Eigth Army, captioned as one soldier of that. His helmet would also suggest this, being different from the British infantry helmet with a slightly peaked brim. General Anders Eigth Army was under British leadership, consisting of white Russians, Poles & Eastern Europeans, mainly Ukrainians, who had escaped from or been released from Russian captivity when Stalin was forced to change allegiance due to Hitlers aggression against his former ally. But it is referred in British history as 'Polish' because Poland was the only country with troops in it which was not under Russian governance in 1939. Although this is also true of parts of The Ukraine, most of Ukraine was under the Stalinist tyranny after the Holodomor.
