Summary[edit]

Arch of Gallienus, Rome.

The arch was built as an opening in the Servian Walls, by a private citizen, M. Aurelius Victor, and dedicated to emperor Gallienus, in AD 262. The legend on the arch, on two lines, reads:

GALLIENO CLEMENTISSIMO PRINCIPI CUIUS INVICTA VIRTUS SOLA PIETATE SUPERATA EST ET SALONINAE SANCTISSIMAE AUG(ustae)
AURELIUS VICTOR V(ir) E(gregius) DICATISSIMUS NUMINI MAIESTATIQUE EORUM.

This arch was built over the older Porta Esquilina, where via Labicana started.
