Description
English: Kavalan, one ethnic group of Plain Aborigines in Northern Taiwan.
中文：保護馬偕（George Leslie Mackay）牧師通過「生番」地區的噶瑪蘭族人武裝隊伍。最右漢人為嚴清華；他出生於1852年，1872年4月19日初次拜訪馬偕牧師，此後，他持續拜訪馬偕牧師，並成為起最初的學生之一，也是北臺灣在地基督徒的先驅之一，他向馬偕牧師學習傳教、醫療和教育等各種知識。並成為其得力助手。在馬偕牧師相關著作和記錄中，噶瑪蘭人被稱作「平埔番」（英語：Pe-po-hoan），臺灣西部平埔族則被稱作「熟番」；馬偕牧師稱讚他們的純樸、良善和熱情，與他們的互動總是充滿愉快回憶，並表示漢人愚弄他們令他感到非常憤怒。
