The factual accuracy of this graphic is disputed. In this table, the labelling of m=-3, m=-2, m=-1, m=1, m=2, m=3 quantum numbers are wrong. Except for the m=0 cases, all depicted orbitals are real-valued superpositions of complex-valued m-eigenstates with two opposite quantum numbers m=±|m|. So an orbital that is labeled here with m=-2 actually has m=±2, and the one labelled m=2 also has m=±2, but with different phases. The sort of real-valued orbitals shown here could be correctly described in terms of spatial directions x, y and z. |
