Summary[edit]

Description
English: Monument in front of the Vardy Presbyterian Church in the Vardy Blackwater community (Newmans Ridge area) of Hancock County, Tennessee, USA. The bricks contain the names of teachers, missionaries, ministers, and students associated with the school, which operated 1892 to 1973. Notable names mentioned include the mission's long-time leader Chester Leonard and his wife Josephine, and long-time teacher and nurse Mary J. Rankin. The names Goins, Gibson, Mullins, and Collins, which appear multiple times, are often called the "four tribes" of the Melungeon people.

Special thanks to John Stansberry for helping me find this place, and to local resident David Collins for showing us around.
