English: A nymphaeum (plural: nymphaea), in the culture of Greece and Rome, was a monument (sometimes arranged as to furnish a supply of water), usually in gardens or parks, consecrated to the nymphs, especially those of springs. These monuments were originally natural grottoes, which tradition assigned as habitations to the local nymphs. In modern times are built fountains with water-flows, called ‘nymphaea’ (or ‘temples of water’), rarely associated with nymphs and grottoes.
Italiano: Un ninfeo è un edificio costruito come grotta, sia sotterraneo che in superficie, in genere accanto ad una fonte d'acqua.
