Dambal is located between Hampi and Goa. It is referred to as Dharmapura and Dharmavolal in Hindu and Jain texts. It was a major town and education center with a fort in its history, but now is a village with a lot of ruins and a few outstanding temples.

Dodda Basappa temple is situated north of Dambal village. Sometimes called Dod Basappa Gudi (lit. "Big Nandi temple"), it is a Svayambhu Shiva shrine. An inscription proves the temple was active in 1184 CE.

The Dodda Basappa temple is one of the best examples of a stellate (star-shaped) Hindu temple in India, a design produced by precisely spinning a square. The sanctum has a 35-foot-diameter and the shikhara forms a 24-pointed star. The Doddabasappa temple is notable for incorporating a torana motif in the temple, as well as konikas that harmonically repeat the torana as artwork, a feature that is a "special distinction of this temple's subtly delicate and fanning wall divisions", according to Meister and Dhaky. The temple was much mutilated during and after Sultanate invasion and conquest of Dambal. The surviving artwork depict gandharvas, nature, dancers, musicians, mithuna, dharma, and artha scenes. Inside, the pillars are polished, stenciled, and meticulously carved on the bottom four vertical faces of a cube. The artwork depict Hindu Vedic, Puranic, and Epic stories.
