Body piercing usually refers to the piercing of a part of the human body for the purpose of wearing jewelry in the opening created. It can be made by insertion of a needle followed by inserting a piece of jewelry or by utilizing a specific tool such as a piercing gun which utilizes specially made jewelry to make the piercing opening while simultaneously inserting the jewelry.

A typical ear piercing gun with a plastic non-autoclavable handle. -
Assorted O rings are used to hold on some kinds of jewelry. -
Immediate disposal of used needles into a sharps container is standard procedure. -
An advanced technique is for the piercer to hold the jewelry pieces in the recessive hand as shown, so they can be retrieved immediately without turning from the client. -

A dermal punch creates a large initial hole by removing a disk of skin unlike a needle that cuts a crescent shaped hole and pushes the plug to one side within the piercing. -
Proper trajectory is essential for the piercing to be straight, practicing on a sponge with a toothpick improves this skill. -
Plastic forceps are single use disposeable and are sometimes included in "Do-It-Yourself" piercing kits. -
Proper glove size, and jewelry length as well as diameter are important. -
A good set of ball holders can be very helpful in getting the bead or ball in place. -
