It is historic region of central India, and it is mentioned as a part of Dakshin Kaushala (Kosala) region in Indian manuscripts dated between 2nd century and 15th century. The district borders southwest region of Odisha and it is also close to Andhra Pradesh. The Bastar region has historic Telugu and Odiya influences. It is known for its tribes, numerous forests, waterfalls and monuments.

In the epic Ramayana, Bastar region is known as Dandakaranya, and in the Mahabharata, it is a part of the Kosala empire. This associations have led various dynasties to build Rama and Mahabharata-related Hindu temples. A notable builder of infrastructure and temples here was the Kakatiya king Pratap Rudra Deva in early 14th century, who established a provincial capital in what is now the Bastar district.
