English: The Caledonia was a wooden paddle steamship built 1815 by John Wood of Port Glasgow (yard Nr. 6)[1]. (Other sources say the builder was James and Charles Wood and James Barclay). In 1817, James Watt jr, who had acquired the „Caledonia“ by purchase, took out the rather flawed machines and replace them with two new ones, each of 14 horse-power. He sailed across the English Channel and the Rhine, up to Koblenz to test the strength of the machine. In 1819 the ship was sold to Denmark. It was used here as a ferry steamer for passenger and parcel transport on the route Kiel - Copenhagen. The Caledonia was the first European steamer that sailed in the open sea. Her dimensions were: 94 ft (28,6 m) length and 15 ft (457,2 cm) breadth.[2]
