Christopher Eric Hitchens (born 13 April 1949 in Portsmouth, England – died 15 December 2011 in Houston, Texas) was a British-American journalist, author, polemicist, essayist, debater and secular activist. He worked for several newspapers and magazines both in the United Kingdom and the United States, amongst which New Statesman, The Nation, The Atlantic, The London Review of Books, The Times Literary Supplement and Vanity Fair. He was the author of twelve books and five collections of essays, and concentrated on a range of subjects, including politics, literature and religion. He published a controversial book on Mother Teresa (The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice) and staunchly advocated the separation of church and state.
