A cone clutch is a form of friction clutch, where the friction surfaces are arranged as a short section of a cone. The parts move axially to engage and disengage the drive.
Cone clutches fit more friction surface into a given diameter than the now far more numerous disk clutches, and so they were commonly used in the early part of the 20th century when cruder frictional materials (often simply leather) were all that was available. Accordingly they are probably best known as parts of vintage cars, although they're still common in automatic transmissions as well.
