Pitalkhora Caves, also known as Brazen Glen, are located nearly 40 km west of Ellora caves. The caves are located in a valley, off a rural road, and onemust walk down steep steps to reach them. They are a collection of 14 ancient Buddhist Caves, of which 4 are chaitya grihas (worship halls), and the rest are viharas. All the caves belong to the Hinayana period but the painting executed in the caves are of Mahayana period.

Pitalkhora may be same as the ‘Petrigala’ mentioned by Ptolemy, and ‘Pitangalya’ of ‘Mahamayuri’, a Buddhist chronicle. The inscriptions at the site suggest these were built between 250 BCE to 4th century CE during the Satavahana dynasty period of ancient India. The caves are significant as they suggest a cultural link between Deccan region of India and eastern coastal region of Andhra Pradesh.
