English: The Provence was an historic province of the Kingdom of France (before, it was also partly a Vatican state in Avignon and the Comtat Venaissin), but did not cover the County of Nice (now in Alpes-Maritimes). Today it is a a natural and cultural region of France that covers most of the western part of current French region of Provence-Alpes-Côtes d'Azur, with the exception of the current department of Hautes-Alpes.
Notes : The maritime parts of Var and Alpes-Maritimes compose the “French Riviera”, which is itself part of Côte d’Azur (that also includes Monaco, but most often the current terms of Côte d’Azur and French Riviera are mixed). The other parts of these departments are included in French Alps : they were shared between the former County of Nice and the former Duchy of Savoy, both integrated only later in France and split across modern French departments within the same administrative region Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
