In her first year of service Shuntien was pirated in 1934 off the Yellow River. She was taken over by pirates disguised as passengers who overpowered the Russians guards and ransacked the ship carrying expatriate passengers from Tianjin to Shanghai. No one was killed but one passenger was injured. There was extensive looting. Two Royal Navy ships based at nearby Weihaiwei, then a British naval base, the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle and the destroyer HMS Witch, were sent to her assistance. The Shuntien was refloated after being beached on the estuary to the Yellow River and aircraft from the Eagle tracked down and attacked the pirates as they attempted to flee in junks. Some of the loot was recovered. Shuntien proceeded safely on her journey to Shanghai. It was one of many piracies conducted on foreign shipping on the China coast between the two world wars.
