D’après Comte lui même, le portrait a été effectué à La Haye, et lui et Hoffmeister ne se sont jamais rencontrés en personne. Il en reçoit plusieurs exemplaires de la part de Constant Rebecque en 1851 puis en 1853.
English: Executed in 1851 by the Dutch engraver Johan Hendrick Hoffmeister (1823-1904), it is the portrait of Auguste Comte that the philosopher himself considered the best. Made after a daguerreotype taken in 1849, it is perhaps the most faithful depiction of Comte, and in any case the most widely publicized image of the philosopher since his death. The lithograph's execution was funded by the Baron de Constant Rebecque, a retired Dutch navy officer and positivist disciple of Comte. According to Comte himself, the lithograph was created in The Hague, and he and Hoffmeister never met in person. He received several copies of the portrait from Constant Rebecque in 1851 and 1853.
