Description

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) held a briefing on super storms on March 24, 2015. In leading off the discussion, Dr. Roger Wakimoto, NSF assistant director for Geosciences, talked about the threats posed by hurricanes, tornadoes and space weather disruptions. He pointed to data from Munich RE, a reinsurance company, on the number and types of catastrophic events that have occurred over the last 20 years. Wakimoto also talked about NSF’s record of four decades of support for fundamental research on hazards and how that research is helping to bring about advances in storm detection and forecasting.
