Description |
English: Oil painting depicting Raden Aria Kusuma di Ninggrat, regent of Galuh
Nederlands: Olieverfschilderij.
Raden Adipati Aria Kusuma Adiningrat was bupati (regent) of Galuh from 1839 to 1886. Included in the painting are insignias and status symbols, both European and indigenous, confirming the fact that the bupati is a man of distinction. The painting in that sense shows the ambivalent position of the Javanese noblesse during the third quarter of the nineteenth century: based on the ancient traditions of Javanese rule on the one hand, and that focused on (and submitted to) European rule on the other..
